Still Life with Cavedogs

The first time I heard the Cavedogs was in the winter of late 1988/early 1989 as I was driving around Boston listening to WFNX, the song was "Baba Ghanooj." Even though my car radio sucked, the song grabbed me, the vocals, the cryptic lyrics, that bass note that crashed through the floor. I thought, "whoa, that's good." At that time WFNX was playing it fairly often and I looked forward to hearing it. I asked around about the group but nobody seemed to know anything about them. By the late summer of 1989 WFNX started playing the song "Bed of Nails" and I really dug it. One afternoon I heard that the Cavedogs were going to be playing live in front of the Harvard Coop and before I went into town I took a sharpie marker to one of my pocket t-shirts;I drew a dog whistling in front of a cave and I pulled it on. I thought that the guys in the band would get a laugh out of my home made concert t-shirt looking down from the stage but something happened and they didn't show. I remember someone saying something about them getting a gig in New York City, and that was the closest I came to seeing the Cavedogs live. In October of 1989 I left Boston and moved to Puerto Rico and started working in the Caribbean National Forest. The shirt's gone now but I still have a picture of me with it on, standing with my crew during an expedition to look for an endangered species. In the winter of 1990 I came back to Boston for a visit and I bought "Joyrides for Shut-Ins" at the same Harvard Coop. A guy in the store told me that one of the guys in the band had worked there and that they were all proud of him. I took that CD back to Puerto Rico with me and it kind of became the soundtrack to my life. Whenever I had it on people would say things like, "Who's that?" "That's good." At that time I had a rooftop apartment right on corner of a popular surfing beach. The surfers who would walk by below my house took to hanging around there at the corner enjoying the music I played. I remember one time seeing a group of them smoking a joint and bobbing their heads to "Joyrides." I gave them a wave and I turned a speaker towards them and cranked up "Step Down." They all gave me surfer salutes and started dancing and jumping around!

In 1991 I moved to Florida and went to work at a wildlife refuge near Tallahassee. I kept hoping the Cavedogs would play a gig in the area because FSU attracted a lot of under the radar screen acts. They didn't (that I'm aware of) but I bought "Soul Martini" as soon as it came out in 1992. From the very first note of "Love Grenade" I was impressed. I thought for sure this was going to be their break out disc. I thought/still think it's brilliant. When I heard sometime later that the Cavedogs had broken up I was really bummed out. For some reason their music really spoke to me and I lamented all the great Cavedogs music that I wasn't going to be able to hear. I did however manage to put my hands on a copy of "Six Tender Moments" and those songs like "Glass Eye" made me feel even more sorry that the Cavedogs were to be no more. Throughout the 1990's I spent at least a couple of months a year working back in the Caribbean National Forest. I had this cool old house at the top of a mountain. At night I would listen to music and my two Cavedogs CD's were never far from the player. I once thought the guys in the band would get a kick out of it if they knew that their music was being played in this really remote location.

To wind up this horribly long autobiography with the Cavedogs, I'd like to say that I just found this web site and I'm encouraged that the group has reunited or kind of reunited and I want to thank the guys in the band for creating music that has given me years of enjoyment. If you guys ever make it to South Florida look me up at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge in Naples, and It'd be my pleasure to take you out on a swamp buggy safari in the Everglades.

Hey, this is a great site. It's nice to know I'm not the only Cavedogs fan left! I wanted to mention a small oversite, the song 'Sorrow' is Todd's. I got a chance to see the reunion show and they sounded better than they did the last time I saw them(which must have been about 9 years ago.) They seemed to be having a great time. Keep up the good work! C

ALSO saw the DOGS open for DM and Mojo at Center Stage in ATL (I dont need to tell you how AWESOME that one was)...here's where my SECOND story comes in...a few months later, I'm working @ 6 Flags Over GA, as a Character Assistant -basically walking around with people dressed up as Daffy Duck and shit- and who do i see?!

Well, let's just say that Todd Spahr was rather shocked to be recognized all the way down in ATL...we chatted for a minute, parted ways, and the band broke up after the next album...well, that's how it goes...ps, Todd was roaming around 6 Flags with Matt Dubin, who worked on that tour with Dead Milkmen, as well as many other tours...if either of you two dorks read this post, email me !! I still have your cockrings!

The Cavedogs are the BEST, most UNDERRATED band of the AWFUL-nineties.

Until about '94 I used to produce the cable access tv show R'n'RTV featuring the best of the regional bands in the metro-Boston area. The show aired in a dozen cable systems- but it pained me that there were often more fine bands than I could feature in R'nRTV 6 to 9 times a year-the Cavedogs were one of those bands that I would have done a segment on.I got one of their videos from Capitol and featured it in a preview but it was too late... I spoke to one of them in a guitar store after they dis-banded a - BUT HERE IS A FUNNY VIGNETTE- back when those musical geniuses were just becoming popular and 'Tayter Country' was playing on the Boston local music radio shows it so happened that as I drove on the last little jog into Hampton Beach on rt.107 that summer there was a billboard at the first corner leading into the town that said only "YOU'RE IN TAYTER COUNTRY" (which was rediculous because we were NOT in potato chip country, we were in Hampton Beach country, if anywhere.) So, since their song 'Tayter Country' was not about potato chips at all I suspected that the writter of 'Tayter Country' was driving past this very same billboard on his way to Hampton thinking it was funny or something akin to ironic, too. Now I learn (from the anecdote on the LYRICs page) that two of the members were working in job where they saw the Tayter Country delivery truck everyday... very interesting, that solves the mystery of the significance of the title. You know, I wonder if that billboard is still there.

One of my all time fave groups and no mistake. I was lucky enough to see the 'dogs in Boston several times in '89-'90,; live and on record they were everything a band should be. I envy anyone who's gonna be at the IPO reunion, and also commiserate with the same crowd now that England's very own Bronco Bullfrog (the 21st Century's answer to The Cavedogs) have pulled out of the event!

I went to Emerson College back int he late 80's and got to see the Cavedogs play at The Channel, warming up for Scruffy The Cat, what a show! We miss you guys, and my Joyrides For Shut-Ins cassette is on maximum rotation in my car nowadays, the "new music" on the radio today stinks compared to the Dogs!

Joyrides is the Greatest album by a Boston band. Precocious, powerful and all-around awesome. Super talented guys, motivating force for many successive boston bands (like my boys in Pooka Stew!)Had the opp to see them as well as Canada, and even got to party with Todd and co one mid-90's birthday nite in somerville. Rock n'rock, cavedogs!

Wow - it's great to see this site! The Cavedogs have been a longtime favorite of mine. Saw them a whole bunch of times in Boston in the late 80s-early 90s. I also had the privilege of getting to know them - great guys all. Still see Todd every once in a while with The Gravy. Last I knew, Brian's in New York and Mark's in LA, and sadly I've lost touch with them. (Maybe they'll see my name here - I can always hope...) At any rate, glad to see they've made it to the Web.

I'm glad someone finaly took the time to make a Cavedogs Site. Todd Spahr's new band (The Gravy's) cd is awesome and everyone should buy it. If you have a TV 59 Les Paul Junior (or a white 62) you should pack it up and send it to Todd free of charge. I would have to agree with the others on this page that Todd is a really cool guy (as well as being extremely talented). He let me stay with him when I lost my room for the night in Boston while heading out to play in Seattle. When it comes to guitar playing, he's pretty good, but he's no Charles Hanson:)

I very glad to find this site and all the old mp3's. I saw them once in Boston don't know where or when but I clearly remember "bed of nails" from the experience. I've had Soul Martini for years and found Joyrides on e-bay (keep trying it turns up now and again) I paid about $12 for it. I'm looking forward to checking out the mp3s and the follow up work by the "x-dogs"

I saw them perform at a place called Club 66 in Asbury Park, NJ back in '91 or '92 I think. They were doing a promotional show for the release of Soul Martini. I was a big fan of the group since I saw them open for the Dead Milkmen in Asbury a couple of years prior. I did not even know that Sould Martini had been released when I saw them at Club 66. I was one of 6 people in the audience. I felt bad when I asked Brian and Todd when they were coming out with a new album. They told me they had a new one out and Brian cursed up a storm about the lack of promotion of RCA's part. Unfortunately, The Cavedogs became another one of RCA's tax write-off bands. It is a complete mystery to me why they never went anywhere. As far as I'm concerned, they were one of the best bands in the past 15 years. I just want to say thanks.

Back in '90 (or was it '91?) I walked into a local headshop/record store expecting to to assulted with the sounds of the Dead or Hawkwind... but lo and behold.... the in-store sound system was playing TAKING UP SPACE!!!! That was the first and only time I've ever bought an album because of hearing it plying in a store. Then a couple of years later I picked up SOUL MARTINI at ARRON'S records in Hollywood. I listened to it non-stop between LA and Tulsa. The Cavedogs we're the best band of the 1990's.

The first time I saw this band was at a keg party in a basement somewhere in Boston late 80s... They were trading sets with a Deadish covery band...rumors of spiked punch...(actually street escapes me.By the Mass ave exit down the street from all the rehersal spaces, kinda by the hospital for you Beantowners) Blew me away...I 'm such a sucker for great pop.It was probably the second best show I've seen... Cut to san diego(my new home) circa 1993?? They played with a heavy rappish band in a small, small club. There were 40 people or so. After the opening band everybody, and I mean everyone, left....I saw the best show I'd seen...Dogs,my girlfirnd, door man and the bartender..Amazing with an empty house to boot!Said a brief hello after the show...This is rocknroll my friends.

Being from the Boston area gave me the opportunity to see The Cavedogs perform live over 20 times. It wasn't just their tunes, but their attitude that made them the greatest band ever to come outta Boston. Their sense of humor shone through at their shows and on radio interviews. They did "Funtime Hours" complete with script and commercial parodies. For a band that wrote some GREAT tunes, they still didn't take themselves too seriously, and had fun with cover tunes. Long live The Cavedogs- the greatest band ever!

I was lucky enough to catch the Cavedogs opening for the Dead Milkmen and Mojo Nixon at the rather intimate Blind Pig in Ann Arbor in '90. Blew me away -- I shook Brian's hand after their set and asked if all their stuff was on the new CD (Joyrides). He said, "Yeah." -- my brush with greatness. Talk about another log on the fire of great bands tossed aside by the music business. But those of use who connected with their stuff are better off for it! Even now, "What In The World" still strikes the same nerve it did ten years ago. And "La La La" is still in my top-ten music for takeoffs when I'm flying. Great band, sad they vanished so soon, but glad they made music for as long as they did. (Nice job on the site! The home-page top is a nice touch!)

I've signed this site already, but hey, there's no law against doing it again, is there? I visited Boston in the Summer and was fortunate enough to catch The Gravy "live", and also hang out with Todd, Michael and Jim at Q Division. They're lovely guys and The Gravy are splendid "live". I urge all Cavedogs fans to get the Gravy "Hollywood" EP from Q. IMHO, it's the nearest thing to the spirit of the Cavedogs that any of the 3 members have recorded since. Cool site, by the way, or have I already said that??

I just found this site today. Yahoo! The Cavedogs have been my favorite group since I too saw them open up for the Replacements at the Ritz in Tampa/St.Pete in 91. It was my first experience with a powerful trio. They placed tight and enegetically. 93FM WXRT in Chicago started playing Leave Me Alone and I was so proud of them for playing a great band while other stations lost out. I'm sad their not together. But who knows maybe they'll consider it! I sure hope they do.

I LOVE THE CAVEDOGS!!! Of course, I am just a tiny bit prejudiced as Todd Spahr is my nephew! Just so everyone knows, he is a fantastic guy and we are extremely proud of him. We did get to one of they're concerts a few years back and had a great time. We try to get all of they're CD's, when possible. I was "turned on" to the Cavedogs after the fact, I'm afraid, by my good buddy Phil Hurley, then of the Gigolo Aunts. I loved the Big Dipper with a vengeance, so Phil recommended I check out the 'dogs, as a like-minded band. I wasn't disappointed. "Joy Rides" in particular (and "Proud Land" in particular in particular!) is a wonderful slab of effervescent pop music that my 18 month old son Evan and I still "rock out" to regularly. The Cavedogs are my favorate band. I have yet to see a band that contains all the best elements. My friend, Rachel, was the manager for the Cavedogs, so I was lucky enough to see them in various Boston venues. I first saw them sometime in the late '80s at Nightstage, where they opened up for the Outlets. Needless to say, the Outlets were quite a letdown after the Cavedogs! I enjoyed their radio hits "Step Down," "Bed of Nails," "Baba Ganooj ," and "Boy in a Plastic Bubble." I'm sorry that they didn't "make it" -- they had all the makings of a successful band -- but record companies and promotion efforts and all that crap seem to supercede the true merits of a band. My theory is that the Cavedogs were just too cool and ahead of their time to be appreciated. I mean, look at the title "Soul Martini!" Who knew that now in the late '90s this whole cocktail phenomenon would be so huge? Alas, timing is everything, and record companies suck! By the way, I stumbled on this site after stumbling onto "alt.music.cavedogs" in the Usenet. Thanks for the memories...
